The 20-county Atlanta region will add 2.5 million people and 1.5 million jobs by the year 2040.
The Region’s Plan is a long-range blueprint that details the investments that will be made over the next 25 years to ensure metro Atlanta’s future success and improve the region’s quality of life. The plan, developed with robust public input, aims to “Win the Future” by providing world-class infrastructure, building a competitive economy and ensuring the region is comprised of healthy, livable communities. It incorporates all of the Atlanta Regional Commission’s (ARC) planning areas – transportation, community development, water resources, aging & health services and workforce development. The plan aims to: improve mobility by investing $85 billion in the region’s transportation infrastructure; create more vibrant, walkable communities; meet the needs of the region’s fast-growing population of older adults; and ensure a supply of clean, abundant water.
Freight Planning
The Atlanta region ranks as one of the nation’s largest inland distribution centers. Freight movement in Atlanta is an indicator of the region’s economic importance. In 2008, ARC completed the Atlanta Regional Freight Mobility Plan, the first freight plan for the Metro Atlanta region. The plan’s goal was to enhance regional economic competitiveness by providing efficient, reliable and safe freight transportation while maintaining the quality of life in the region’s communities. The Atlanta Regional Freight Mobility Plan Update serves as the guiding planning document supporting the region’s freight and goods movement strategies. The plan builds on previous planning efforts while evaluating recent changes and identifying potential future freight needs in the region.
Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning
As congestion continues to worsen, cycling and walking are becoming viable alternative modes of transportation in the Atlanta region; however, many facilities in the region are not safe enough for people to feel comfortable doing so. The ARC’s “Walk. Bike. Thrive!” Plan will identify strategies and projects to address the need of cyclists and pedestrians. The plan incorporates the 20-county region, including Coweta County.

Southern Regional Accessibility Study
A comprehensive study of the southern area of the Atlanta region was completed in 2007. With the tremendous growth taking place in this area of the region and that is projected for the future, the Southern Regional Accessibility Study (SRAS) establishes a strategic, long-term vision and area-wide plan that provides a strategy for growth while ensuring accessibility, mobility, and quality of life. The study area included Coweta, Clayton, Fayette, South Fulton, Henry, and Spalding counties and their municipalities.
