Floodplain management is part of the Coweta County Community Development Department.

Coweta County participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and maintains copies of the current Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) for review and information.  Staff are available to assist individuals in locating their property on the maps and providing technical assistance and information about flooding hazards in the area.

Flood Hazards

Flooding can occur during or following periods of heavy rain in low lying areas and adjacent to streams, creeks, or rivers.  Although flooding is a naturally occuring event in these areas, localized flooding can also be caused by damaged or obstructed drainage structures.

Flood Insurance

Damage to homes and other buildings is generally not covered by homeowners or other property insurance.  Coweta County's participation in the NFIP, and the adoption and enforcement of regulations to limit development and other construction activity in the floodplain, allows residents to purchase federally-backed flood insurance through participating insurance agents.  Flood insurance is available to residents throughout the county, within or outside of the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA), with reduced rates for properties located outside of the SFHA.  Flood insurance may be required by lenders if the property appears to lie within a delineated floodplain as shown on the FIRM.
