The Transportation Planning Department is responsible for overseeing all transportation planning for Coweta County. The department manages long-range, multi-modal transportation planning projects and works closely with federal, state, regional and local officials on transportation planning, project programming and policies to ensure that current and future transportation needs of the County are identified and solutions to those needs are developed in a timely and efficient manner
In addition, the department is responsible for:
- Overseeing the County’s public transit program, Coweta Connect, including working with various state and federal agencies on funding and compliance.
- Acting as the County’s Title VI Coordinator for surface transportation, public transit and airport projects ensuring compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and related laws and regulations, among various other tasks.
Historical Background
- In 2004, Coweta County became part of the 18-county Atlanta Regional Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) area.
- In 2010, the Atlanta MPO area expanded to all or parts of 20 counties.
- As a limited member of the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) for transportation planning purposes, Coweta County and its municipalities coordinate transportation planning and implementation efforts through the ARC’s fiscally constrained and air quality conforming Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) for long-range projects and Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) for short-range projects.
- The county also coordinates with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA).
- Coweta County is a member government of the Three Rivers Regional Commission (TRRC).
